Hiya KRS,
I've checked this site regularly the last few months since I came upon it. Have you ever thought of spending your time writing a book or autobiography? You have told your story brilliantly and with such honesty and emotion.
Not many people understand what people in your situation are forced to handle on a daily basis. Everyone working with patients like yourself should read your story. It would definitely change the way some of them treat and care for their patients.
Keep your spirits up,man!!

Hey Kris,
Your presentation to the Plumas Hotshots this May was a real wakeup call. Your reputation on this crew remains impeccable; tough as nails / an astute perfectionist, your attention to detail has not dwindled (as I gather from your extensive website). You do not know me, but I know much of your story - you are a legend of sorts around here... we need more of your kind. You probably don't reads this guestbook anymore because of all those idiots that clog it up with mindless nonesense, but if you do I wanted to say thanks for coming and talking to us. Your genious. I'll be swamping all summer so if you have any tips let me know, and Ill be finishing up my last semester at Chico State next spring also so maybe Ill see ya.

You are a really negative person. You never have anything good or positive to say. And I realize your were a "wildland" firefighter (not a "real" firefighter -- most of those guys go to college) for a year or so, but you accepted the risk of injury as all law enforcement personnel do. I mean it's no wonder you wandered into this occupation, as it doesn't take any education -- in CA they let the crimanals it. i understand -- you grew up in a very backward/remote place and couldn't go to college so you were doing whatever you could (without an education) for a job.
And I had to laugh at your "girlfriend application" I think this is at least the second one (girl that you met on the net)that was going to be "moving to Chico with you". Guess that's one way to find a caregiver!! Apparently she doesn't mind that you still have your "application" on line. Hey, more power to you!! Apparently it worked Go for it.

The Definition of Love
by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678)
My love is of a birth as rare
As 'tis for object strange and high;
It was begotten by Despair
Upon Impossibility.
Magnanimous Despair alone
Could show me so divine a thing
Where feeble Hope could ne'er have flown,
But vainly flapp'd its tinsel wing.
And yet I quickly might arrive
Where my extended soul is fixt,
But Fate does iron wedges drive,
And always crowds itself betwixt.
For Fate with jealous eye does see
Two perfect loves, nor lets them close;
Their union would her ruin be,
And her tyrannic pow'r depose.
And therefore her decrees of steel
Us as the distant poles have plac'd,
(Though love's whole world on us doth wheel)
Not by themselves to be embrac'd;
Unless the giddy heaven fall,
And earth some new convulsion tear;
And, us to join, the world should all
Be cramp'd into a planisphere.
As lines, so loves oblique may well
Themselves in every angle greet;
But ours so truly parallel,
Though infinite, can never meet.
Therefore the love which us doth bind,
But Fate so enviously debars,
Is the conjunction of the mind,
And opposition of the stars.

To Londra and Jamie below. I think it's more of a Los Angeles plastic surgery
thing then a general Califonria issue. I find that we have a lasik new york
issue here. We have quite a few laser eye surgery new york
converts. It's like people are afraid to wear glasses anymore. Oh well I love my fellow New Yorkers with or without glasses. Maybe you two should move to New York! speaking of moving do you know a good immigration attorney

To Londra below (it is a down to earth site), I couldn’t agree more. I work in Los Angeles and there is a plastic surgeon

a tummy tuck

who tries to convince everyone he meets to throw out their glasses and get lasik

breast augmentation
even breast reduction

Hi Krs, I picked up your story in the
Westwood PinePress. It hit me hard so I also read everything about you I
could find listed on Google and I read your neat Hot Shot website
stories. I like your "go get um" attitude. Hey, just thought I needed to
give you a few words of encourgement. I had Polio as a boy and was in
similar circumstances although I wasn't whacked by a tree and broken up
like you. I was told I would never walk again. Also told there wasn't
much of a future for me. You have much encouragement from people, but
most importantly---you have the will power to beat the odds. Like you, I
had the determination and will not to be defeated. Not only did I walk,
but I've hunted, hiked, and roamed my beloved High Sierra adopted home.
I've ridden motorcycles, mine was a 650 Triumph, which is something I
wasn't supposed to ever be able to do. I was born and raised on a ranch
in the Gilroy, Central Coast area. I worked in hay on our ranch, I
loaded, by hand, 90 pound bales onto the hay trailer, I've used a chain
saws to cut oak wood and I've loaded it. I'm twice your age and still
going strong. The point of all this is to encourage you never to give
up. You'll make it. You've got the right attitude. And with all your
wonderful friends pulling for you and praying for you you've got a
cosmic power working on your behalf that's awesome. Hang in there Krs.
My prayers are are being added to all the others being said on your

It looks like the Arson Summit is on for
October. I hope you can be a part of it. It will be taking the subject
to the heart of eastern Kentucky, Prestonsburg, and discussing the
subject frankly and openly. If we can get the people lined up that we
want, it should be a good start. Above all, our message is that the
community level is needed to make the difference. We are asking people
to take a stand against arsonists. No matter how small a part, each
individual can make a difference. Bye for now. Special thoughts for you
and your family. Jim Funk

I first learned about you last fall when
the Forestry called the Catholic Church here in Manchester (where I work
as an administrator). He was asking us for prayers that you would be
okay! He was also asking us to spread the word to stop arson in Clay
County. It was bad everywhere. Many nights the fires were burning so
close to the church we were all scared. So I prayed for you every time
we got to together. And I pleaded with people if they saw anyone
starting fires to please turn them in. Then one of the families from the
Church called me and said that the firefighter I kept praying for is in
the Lexington Herald. That is when I read this article and checked out
your sight. I am a 26 year-old, single female and I think of how hard it
must be for someone like you who were so athletic to be forced to change
your lifestyle. Feel free to write back if you wish. I feel like you
have been and still are a part of my life and the lives of the people in
Clay County who you were giving of yourself.

Krs: I heard about your accident last fall
and read more about you yesterday in the Lexington Herald. As a Clay
Countian, forester, fire chief and Christian I want to say I really hate
what has happened to you. Arson is a real problem here and most people
don't realize how bad the consequences can be. Whether you know it or
not you have become a symbol of what can happen as a result of a stupid
or just plain evil arsonist's actions. Whether your pain and disability
can help them see the error of their way remains to be seen. I do
believe that in all things God is working for our good. I will continue
to pray for you.

Hi Krs, We're glad to here that you are
back home in Quincy. We have enjoyed reading your web site. If there is
something that we can do to help you ( I've tried but haven't found you
a Woman, yet), let us know (rides, food, whatever?). While you were
recovering I sent Kevin Russ several E-mails (for shits and grins) but
he hasn't responded, but the ski area he used to work at did (they are
looking for him too, imagine that!, they don't have your bike, and they
want me to quit bugging them). He also cleaned-out Johnsville ski hill
too, before he fled the area). On a more positive note; the whole fire
fighting community has been following your progress, you have been a
topic of conversation on "wildland fire.com they said" and everyone is
happy to hear of your progress. If you need some help with wheel chair
info you might check with Katherine Hayes at the Alpine Meadows Adaptive

He is carrying the Olympic torch next week walking using only a cane. In

AHA! The PT gets her word in, finally!
KRS, as our time together wanes (or does it? I love discharge
planning!!), I wish to impart you with a perspective outside yourself.
You have covered lots of territory in the re-learning of movement and
balance amid the rethinking of life and hacking out a new outlook on
life, and have been a joy to work with in the meanwhile. Now that you
are not medically restricted to move, you and your future therapists
(lucky them!) will be able to move ahead with all ilk of interventions
to increase your mobility. Who knows where you will wind up?!?! but that
you will be at the top of your game and that you will touch many lives
along the way is not in question. Moment to moment, little things along
the way have been downright irritating. Remember, though, that control
lies in your determination(boundless), self-advocacy (unquestionably
boundless) and the sense of humor(quirky and oh-so-refreshing; please
reference Krs' description of his floormates at the Hill if you have
questions about this!!) with which you balance all things. To end --
helmets off to you! -- Kara

Hi Krs, was thinking about you the other
day when Owen was trying to talk my son into going sno boarding. I'm
glad to hear you are fighting the good fight and the positive attitude
will help immensely..Good old FRC is still here and kicking hard. They
are planning on a Football team for the fall and new recruits from all
over the world. What a crazy place. I finally get to graduate out of
here this spring along with others and it would be cool to see you here.
Think of Quincy in the Spring over Memorial Day weekend. Lovely place
that time of year. It is completely cold right now, frozen path to the
top. Little bits of snow on the mountains and the good old mill fog in
the morning. Believe me, we have not forgotten about you, just the new
semester has started again. Speech class was really great with you
there. I always remember that the day you were wearing long pants was
wash day, even on the coldest day of the year. brrrrr. and me in my
thermals. Keep up the hard work, it can only get better. Camille in
Quincy at FRC

Hi Chris! Just read the last days of your
diary. Too bad you get heated up in your room. I am glad you will be
moving out soon, that will increase your personal freedom. How are your
games with your legs going? Don't stop them! Keep fighting. Tomorrow I
will fly home. But I will come back soon and visit you then. Lots of
love to you and Ray and Pat. Big hug, Mirjam

Hey Krs,I enjoy reading your daily
"journal." That is pretty screwed up that the nurses put things to where
you can't get to them easily. Well, at least you will be moving on to
bigger and better places and things. Thanks for sending me an email. It
was great to hear from you. You are truely an inspiration. Thanks again
for keeping us all updated on your progress. We are all pulling for ya!!
Hope to see you back out on the line soon. Take care. Dede

Hey kris, Amy told me to check you out.
Finally getting to it. Don't you just love quaint Kentucky. All that
damn cuntry music and that awful pathetic accent. Fortunately, there not
as lazy as Georgians, the accent I mean. I hope i'm not offending
anyone, if so too bad. Let me know if you have a hankering for anything.
I'll make sure you get it. Amy tells me that soon you might be going to
Colo. I hope your upwind of the cows. Anyways, enjoying reading your
site and we'll send pictures of our children to scare the hell out of
you.

Wow, your the man who I always thought of
as a modern day huck fin! Get back up asap, bro cause I/we need you!
Maybe I'm selfish but you taught this old boy how to board strong enough
to place in 2nd in the masters borderX of USASA nationals and last year
we went out together and cleaned up at Sierra for acouple of races! I
was going to call you over Xmas to get another load of fir/cedar for new
fencing at the ranch, but I thought you might be doing the snowboard
school thing you ran last year. Whats up with this Kentucky thing? I
can't believe that Plumas was called to that part of the world and they
have fires? From what piro's?? You know I've skiied in Boone,NC, but it
was kids stuff. You know each time I drive up to Rose and see the Slide
backside you and I carved up a couple of years ago, I think of you and
it really makes the day of boarding fun (even though I'm always alone up
there and no one can still keep up with us,except the patrol! So lets
hit ti soon, I know you carried me when I was learning at Mammoth, so if
necessary, I'll do the same!! Love you bro. Carolyn says hi.

You and what you are doing with this web
site is an inspiration. Hear that before? Sick of it? We lost a
snowboarding, firefighting bud here on the Bitterroot this summer from a
silent snag out of somewhere. David still inspires his friends and I
simply through memories but you have the gift of life and the ability to
reach out to many. Thank you for your courage, strength, time and effort
in keeping us apprised of your progress. May there be more every day!
Good vibes sent to you daily from Montana!

back out to CA for your time off. Talk to you soon.

Krs, best wishes to you. I was on the Red
Bird as an ICT3 when you were injured. I was on another fire about 5-10
miles to the North. My heart sank, as well as everyone elses on our
fire, when we heard the radio traffic. I sit here with tears in my eyes
(hard to admit for this ex-hotshot) and I'm not sure if they are tears
of sadness or... joy that you are so damn stong in spirit and
conviction...You make ALL OF US, THE WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS much stronger
and prouder... You'll be back to full strength soon... As for the
arsonist... I wrote a letter to the President. I expressed my concern
that we were fighting terrorism abroad but not in our own country. Arson
is terrorism... especially the type we dealt with on the Red Bird
District in Kentucky. Speedy recovery... Ken
