Casper took to the new house right away, playing with Francis and getting terrorized by Herbie. He wanted to play, and it took him a little while to figure out Herbie hates all other ferrets and will bite if they let him.
Reubin was a different story... He had the "green slime" (a viral infection) when he got here... Picked it up at the pound we think so I had to give him this "sauce" that tastes absolutely 'orrible. (I tasted it) It's flavored with choke-cherries and bitter juice I think... He hated it. I had to give it to him twice a day and I felt bad because he knew when it was time and would hide from me. So he was in a new house, sick, and getting "tortured" twice a day... he wasn't having much fun at the new house. He's better now tho and whenever he's awake he tries to play with me... Runs up and "attacks" the footplate and that sort of thing...
After the pound We then went over to the Petco just to see what they had there... I was thinkin' of pickin' up a little tiny baby weasel if they had any... But they didn't have any really young ones. While we were there we happened to meet Miss October Pawlik who runs the Biggest Little Ferret Shelter in Reno. She gave us a pile of ferret information, as I didn't know simple stuff like they need high protien food (I'd been feeding them catfood) or eventualy they'll start having endocrine type problems and that sort of thing. She's quite knowledgable, and if you're in the market for a kid of your own (and you don't live somewhere where they're illegal or she won't let you adopt) I highly reccomend going by her shelter to see if any of the little fuzzies there want to come home with you.
If you can't for some reason get a little weasel just yet but you'd like to help a sick one, there's a few in the shelter who could use a new friend. I myself feel sorry for the poor little guys... When you read the stories it was usually an abusive or uncaring human who put them into their current situation. I don't care if someone doesn't like animals in general or thinks ferrets in particular look like rats or something... But once someone gets an animal, ANY kind of animal, that critter's life is in their hands. It's not right to neglect an animal like that. If someone cannot take care of an animal, how can we trust them to raise kids? It's that simple. So now that someone has screwed up the lives of these poor critters it's up to the rest of us to fix it. So if you want to, and you can, help them please.
Ferrets are illegal in California. Why? I have no idea. They can be a bit scary when they yawn and show all those big pointy teeth. But other than that they're nothing to worry about. They sleep 23 hours a day for crissakes and if they got outside somehow they have such an ADD problem they'd prolly forget to eat and die in a few days. In fact, the only things that should be worried about meeting a ferret are the odd potted plant or sandbox... Or maybe a plunger. Yup, If I was a plunger I'd run for my life.
So I've had a few requests for weasel pictures. Thankfully these guys aren't very camera-shy so it's fairly easy to get pics. Good pics are the problem as they look away as soon as I hit the shutter. I need to catch them unaware in order to get one of them actualy looking into the thing.. Or bribe them with gummybears. Francis REALLY likes gummybears.
So anyway- here's the good ones I have so far. When I get more, I'll put them up.
On 2 Aug I caught Casper playing in a bucket of dirt I'd left in the living room and *thought* was safe... Sigh..
Reubin and Francis wanted to play too, but not in the dirt. Notice Francis trying to read pre-calculus again..
